At ParaMotion, we believe that movement is the foundation of living a pain-free, fulfilling life—especially for those with hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). Our method combines two groundbreaking practices: the LYT Yoga Method by physical therapist Lara Heimann and the Integral Movement Method (IMM) by movement therapist Jeannie Di Bon. These systems focus on more than just flexibility or strength—they emphasise alignment, control, and the mind-body connection.

ParaMotion is a training method that focuses on reducing pain by reconnecting with our parasympathetic system. Most of EDS/HDS patients are stuck in fight/flight response which keeps the sympathetic nervous system on and does not allow the body to rest and restore. This can lead to fast burnout, injury and a multitude of multi-systemtic symptoms in the nervous system, digestive system and musculoskeletal system. That is why, it is crucial for EDS/HSD patients to approach training with a holistic understanding so that the body improves without risk of complications.

Zebras are usually used to refer to EDS/HDS patients as to symbolize the uniqueness of every individual. Every zebra has a unique stripes pattern and every EDS/HSD body has its uniqueness and hence, every exercise program must be customised to that individual body in order to reach the best results.

ParaMotion is a personalised approach that takes the holistic understanding of the multi-systemic nature of EDS/HSD and introduces science-based methods and techniques to transform our bodies from a fearful painful state to an integrated safe state.

The LYT Yoga Method: A Science-Based Approach to Movement

The LYT Method is not your typical yoga practice. Developed by a physical therapist, it seamlessly blends yoga, physical therapy, and functional movement principles. The focus? Alignment, mobility, and fostering optimal movement patterns. Unlike traditional yoga, which often emphasizes flexibility and breathing, LYT takes a holistic approach. It’s rooted in an in-depth understanding of anatomy and neurology, ensuring that every movement is safe and effective for your unique body.

Key Benefits of LYT Yoga:

  • Alignment Focused: Helps improve posture and reduce strain on joints.

  • Neurological Understanding: Taps into how your brain controls movement, making it perfect for those with chronic pain or hypermobility.

  • Comprehensive: Integrates mobility, strength, and mental well-being, making it a holistic practice that supports both the body and mind.

Whether you’re new to movement or looking to optimize your current fitness routine, LYT provides a sustainable, injury-free way to move, improve strength, and feel better in your body.

The Integral Movement Method (IMM): Designed Specifically for Hypermobile Bodies

For those with hypermobility, especially Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), traditional exercises can often do more harm than good. That’s why we incorporate the Integral Movement Method (IMM), a system designed specifically to address the challenges of hypermobility. IMM works by retraining the body to move in ways that protect joints, prevent injury, and promote long-term strength and stability.

IMM’s Six Core Principles

  1. Breath

Learning to breathe efficiently isn’t just about respiratory health. For hypermobile individuals, faulty breathing patterns can create tension and pain, particularly in the thoracic region. Relearning proper breath control helps relieve pain, reduce subconscious bracing patterns, and improve overall movement.

  2. Relaxation

Chronic pain often leads to fear and tension in the body, which perpetuates the pain cycle. IMM encourages relaxation techniques which turns off the sympathetic nervous system (fight/flight response) and allows the parasympathetic system to turn on so that we can relax and release tension in the body. Most EDS/HSD patients are stuck in fight/flight sympathetic response so by using relaxation techniques, we can learn to release muscle tension, reduce stress, and ease the anxiety that many people with EDS experience around movement.

  3. Proprioception

Proprioception is the body’s ability to sense where it is in space. Many hypermobile individuals have reduced proprioceptive awareness, making them more prone to injury. IMM helps retrain the body to improve sensory awareness, reducing the likelihood of joint locking, strain, or sprains.

  4. Stability

Stability is essential for hypermobile bodies. IMM focuses on functional stability rather than forcing “core” activation, which can sometimes increase tension. Instead, we work with natural movement patterns, using fascia-friendly strategies to enhance whole-body stability.

  5. Balance

Hypermobile individuals often struggle with balance, which can lead to fear around movement or even walking. IMM addresses this by improving alignment, foot and ankle mobility, and overall coordination, helping clients regain confidence in their daily activities.

  6. Posture

Posture for hypermobile individuals is not about holding a rigid, “perfect” stance. IMM promotes dynamic posture, encouraging a responsive, elastic body that can adapt to different movements and environments.

Combining LYT Yoga and IMM: A Whole-Body Solution for EDS

By blending the precision of LYT Yoga with the hypermobility-specific principles of IMM, ParaMotion offers a comprehensive approach that addresses both the physical and mental challenges of living with EDS. This combination helps clients:

  • Reduce Pain: By improving alignment and reducing joint strain.

  • Increase Strength: Safely build muscle without risking injury.

  • Boost Confidence: Gain confidence in movement, reducing the fear of flare-ups or injury.

  • Promote Mental Well-being: Through breath-work and relaxation, alleviate anxiety and stress related to chronic pain.
